The now famous Cardonet Pancake Day once again took place on Shrove Tuesday, which this year fell on the 13th of February. It is the day before Ash Wednesday and in times gone by it was seen as an efficient way of using up a host of fatty foods before embarking on Lent.
In our case, we went all out to stock up on a host of different ingredients and as is now tradition, we invited a professional chef into our kitchen for the day to create a variety of both sweet and savory pancakes to order.
As any chef will tell you, preparation is key to success. Our chef went to great lengths to make sure that everything was laid out perfectly because he knew that he was going to have some very hungry mouths to feed and he would have to do it quickly. That included our entire team, some of our customers, as well as friends and family. The smell of perfect pancakes had the whole office abuzz and had mouths watering, as well as an orderly queue forming outside the kitchen door early on.
And then we were off, with the first pancake, fittingly an ‘IT Specialist’ being delivered. The ‘IT Specialist’ is made up of pecans, mascarpone and maple syrup and it is designed to give the eater an energy boost, with pecans containing health benefiting nutrients, minerals, antioxidants and vitamins that are essential for wellness and the maple syrup providing quick, easily-absorbable energy to keep on exercising (our minds).
In no time everyone had their plates full, with savoury options like ‘The Italian Job’ (Cherry Tomatoes, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Basil and Mozzarella) and ‘Popeye’ (Spinach and Cheese, with Garlic) being firm favourites, along with sweet options such as ‘Cheeky Monkey’ (Nutella and Banana) and ‘Captain Crunchy’ (Peanut Butter and Crunchy Nuts). It was time for seconds and then thirds.
The best thing about Pancake Day is the fact that we are legitimately allowed to eat as many pancakes as we feel we can fit in and with so many incredible options on offer, why wouldn’t we try?
Now many people celebrate pancake day by taking part in races throughout the country, where they need to run in relays while flipping pancakes. We are a relatively competitive bunch and it looks like superb fun, but at the end of the day the opportunity of missing out on a variety of fresh pancakes made to order was just too great. Perhaps next year.
